Use your resources and your love for tennis to guide you. His ways are not ours, way beyond ours. I rejoice over what the Eagles have learned and will be leaving Tucson with; deep in each heart each one knows... treasure the pressure, the growth, the experience! Buddy! A hero! :-) This is support, friendship, loyalty - I appreciate this young man! I also thank all, Ms. Edith, Mr. Myron, Coaches Tobias & Derrick, and, yes, my husband, Jay, for taking the time to invest in our greatest assets: our children! God bless! Chimene, here! First of all, I would like to thank everyone for their support, prayers, and yes donations! Without you all this entire experience would not be possible!!! Now on to what you all would like to know most: what is it like here in Toucson, AZ??? Well, I'll tell you right now that it's nothing like what you might think judging by movies and commercials... The altitude is different. I had to adjust my breathing all of yesterday from the time I landed at the airport, (which has got to be the quietest, most interestingly, um, DESERTED airport I have ever been to) up until the time I finished eating in the evening. Landscape-wise, this place it the quintessential dry desert. There is ABSOLUTELY NO GRASS! Only cactus and rocky mountains and arid canyons, desolate land, and SAND and ROCKS! NO GRASS AT ALL!!! And NO such thing as SHADE here unless it's man-made. Everything is the same colour here: either a rusty terra-cotta redish orange or a tan or a straight brown. SO BORING! The resort here as well as the mall we were SO HAPPY TO FIND (we thought there was no life here until we saw it...lol) is just about the only thing that would give anyone an inkling of an impression that people live here. It is beautiful, however. The sunrises and sunsets are GORGEOUS over the monstrous canyons. Even now as I am typing this, I could look out of my window or stand on the balcony and see mountains. BREATHTAKING... I still miss grass though. Next, the resort in itself is very nice. Our room (Mrs. Edith, Maya, Camille and I share one) is very comfy, and serves its purpose atfer or between matches whena all we girls can do is throw ourselves onto a bed and rest our tired legs or shower to loosen up our aching muscles. Today, our matches begun. Game day. We won against Hawaii, 50-46. I lost my girls' singles, but won my mixed doubles. In the second round against Pacific North West (from Washington state) WE PLAYED HARD, losing though 56-33. However, Though I lost worse in those, I do believe that I had more fun and moved my feet more (my biggest thing). Michael has proven himself to be a great doubles partner, encouraging me and giving my great pointers/reminders on the court and off. Though we lost our mixed doubles against Washington state, we made them very nervous during the tiebreaker. We fought hard, and played hard. In the end, I was glad to know we fought. The trick to playing here in this altitude is NOT HITTING HARD!!! The air is so THIN and LIGHT that it will carry a ball a long way PAST THE SERVICE LINE if you just push it over. This is SOOOOOO strange for me because I'm used to stroking the ball with a bit more...force. The flight here was very interesting, as it was my first flight in Lord knows how many years (2 yrs old?). It was LONG, but the scenery was beautiful, especially when we got to flying over New Mexico. I'll tell you more in the next entry... So that's it for now. The first day here was weird seeing all these mountains,rocks,and cactuses. The air is also really different and it takes a little bit of time to get acclimated to it. Our first match was at 8:00am today and we played a team from Hawaii. My doubles partner Camille and I did really good. We were down at one point 1-4 in the second set and came back to win the match.
